The photo slideshow above was taken just before we purchased her late last August, 2012. At the bottom of the page is a current slideshow. You will notice we have taken good care of her this past year!
Our 1984 Volkswagon Vanagon Westfalia is currently for sale. . . She is a uniquely crafted and highly dependable custom RV that has been upgraded with a freshly rebuilt 2.1L engine and many custom features. . . Please direct inquiries for purchase or further information to [email protected].
This incredibly clean Vanagon has only 136,500 original miles and rides smooth and strong on ALMOST NEW HD All-Terrain truck tires (they are even studable, if you choose, for extreme ice and snow and are worth over $1100 - Perfect for her increased clearance over any terrain or at any elevation). Her manual transmission is tight and shifting smooth with a new clutch replaced along with the engine approximately 10,000 miles ago. She has been meticulosly maintained with phosphate free coolant, and recent brake work front and rear, a 1 year old HD battery, wire pack and spark plugs, as well as a new fuel pump and lines within the last 24 months. Just serviced with a complete coolant flush, oil change and new alternator belt.
Her interior equipment also includes an upgraded Pioneer stereo system with a CD player with AUX IN as well as USB auxiliary ports and handy remote (great from the top bunk) all tuning clear through 4 new infinity speakers. Her PopTop canvas is also 1 year old and no expense was spared on this OEM 3-window design made with the highest quality material, sporting heavy stitching reinforcements at every seam and zipper. The screened windows provide excellent ventilation and the front zips completely open to allow access to the built-in luggage container on top of the cab.
In addition to the tremendous versatility of the original design, Our Westfalia has been outfitted for comfort and aesthetic enjoyment. From the tough and richly hand scraped solid 5/8" Hickory tongue and groove plank flooring in the kitchen to the real, four-coat, hand finished birch wood interior side and overhead linings, this Westy is truly unique. Her paint is the original Assuan Brown factory color and in excellent condition. The carpet in front is a heavy gauge designer Stainmaster nylon and her seats, both fore and aft, are covered with a high quality and easy to care for synthetic blended, Nautica brand custom upholstery fabric.
A 2" reinforcement of high density automotive grade upholstery foam provides great stability as well as lumbar and lat support and custom lumbar pillows are provided for the front seats in a matching Nautica fabric design. Firm, tight and comfy, her fully articulating captains chairs are as ready for new adventures as her bunks are for good rest after a long day of exploration and fun. Her features are not only beautiful but selected for practical use. All her wood and counter top surfaces can be wiped clean with water without fear of damaging the finishes. The carpets have built-in stain protection, and all of her trim pieces inside and out have been resurfaced, repainted or replaced.
Details often make the difference whether you are trekking across the western slope of the Rockies, cutting through San Francisco on your way to the crashing surf of Big Sur, or just kicking back with the setting sun over a favorite glass of vino at that certain magic overlook near your home . . .
And in this case, no detail was too small in the renovation of this German classic made American by long hot western days along some of the most scenic byways anywhere in the world. . . . If you haven't gotten the bug yet, there's most certainly a Westfalia experience awaiting you out there soon, and if you're gonna go, why not do it in comfort and style.
For over a decade Volkswagon showed the world the next generation of travel innovation with the introduction of the Vanagon. And this model has been upgraded for more power and convenience, a perfect blend of efficiency and reliability befitting this fully enclosed RV. . . While sleeping up to four adults this Westfalia package features a fully functioning kitchen with two burner propane stove, a sink that can draw from a 13 gallon on board water tank or from campground utilities, a refrigerator that can be powered by electricity or from the same 3.5 gallon propane tank that feeds the stove.
This particular model also has a power relay and battery reservoir (battery needs to be added) under the driver's seat for a dedicated deep cell RV battery. This is the type that is re-powered by your alternator, but draws independently so as not to interrupt your primary automotive power source. These vehicles are crafty when it comes to storage space as well, their design allowing for maximum gear, clothing and food, not to mention toy storage if you have little campers in tow or just in town for a weekend visit.
This exceptional Westfalia comes with a clean Carfax report from the previous owner attesting to her lifelong western citizenship. She has been garage kept most of her life and shows it. Her body is about as rust free as a Vanagon can be and her recent transformative restoration was conducted primarily because she was in such great overall condition inside and out.
Our asking price of $19,950 reflects the quality of this amazing cross section of function and design. Westy's of any quality are getting more difficult to come by, but in this condition and with these aesthetic and mechanical upgrades, a thoroughly road-tested Vanagon with so much love poured into her is truly a rare find indeed. It comes fully stocked with color coordinated dishes, glasses, utensils and more. We are able to use Paypal for deposits but appreciate cash in exchange for a clean and clear title at time of pick up. The van can be seen in and around Washington State as she turns heads from the Pacific Ocean in the West to Roosevelt Lake in the East.
We purchased her one year ago from the craftsman who did all the restoration work and contracted the engine rebuild. We bought it after seeing it online within the first 24 hours it was for sale. The ad generated responses from all over the country and we didn't want to miss out on "the One" for us. We sent a deposit and flew down to Flagstaff, AZ to pick up the van. Driving through Sedona, I started experiencing the magic. Pulled into a State Park and the Ranger said, "Did you pull this out of a museum? It looks amazing for its age!"
We went from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Tacoma, and everywhere we went she started conversations along the way. Let's face it, there are plenty of boring, grey or brown interiors in the Westy family, but this gorgeous interior is unique in all the world! We had an awesome time bringing up the van across Arizona and California, up the coast to Santa Barbara, Monterey, the Redwoods, Oregon Coast and finally up to Washington State.
A couple of my concerns when purchasing the van a year ago were the manual transmission and lack of air conditioning. Research taught me that the manual transmission would actually give me more power and control of uphill speed and I definitely found this to be true. The air conditioning in the Westfalia usually does very little to cool the front passengers, but does do fairly well in the rear. The units seem to have a lot of issues though including regularly recharging them. We find the ventilation underway pretty adequate most of the time. When crossing the desert last year in 100 degrees, we did add a 12 volt van up front to move more air and lived to tell about it! I guess you can't have everything, but this van comes awfully close...
Why the heck are you selling her then? Good question! Well, our love of cruising on the water is even stronger than cruising on land. So, we are purchasing a sail boat that will hopefully carry us around the world someday. There are a few hearty souls that have gone LONG distances in a Westy, but my wife tells me that unless it is longer than 40 feet and floats, she isn't interested. Hey, plans and dreams can change and we want to spend more time on the water. It's hard to see the van getting used only a couple of times this summer. Speaking of which, we just got back from a great camping trip in Eastern Washington and the van ran flawlessly.
Thank you for visiting our site and appreciating the Westfalia experience. In honor of the Volkswagon tradition of design quality and excellence, the previous owners enjoyed tricking-out this very special Westfalia. Should you decide to make this birch wood beauty your Next Adventure we know you will enjoy the unique design elements as we have.
